In Situ Entrapment of Catalase within Macroporous Cryogel Matrix for Ethanol Oxidation: Flow-through Mode versus Batch Reactor

In this article, the biocatalytic oxidation of ethanol into acetaldehyde was studied using a catalase entrapped within monolithic polyampholyte cryogel, p(APTAC-co-AMPS), as catalyst. When an anionic monomer, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt (AMPS), mixed with cationic (3-acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (APTAC), under cryo-polymerization conditions at molar ratio monomers [APTAC]:[AMPS] = 75:25 mol.% in presence 10 cross-linking agent, N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA), macroporous cryogels containing various amounts were synthesized situ. The conversion good-to-high yields observed flow-through and batch-type reactors optimal conditions: T 10–20 °C, pH 6.9–7.1, [C2H5OH]:[H2O2] 50:50 vol.%. According to SEM images, pore sizes p(AMPS-co-APTAC) cryogel vary from 15 55 μm. catalytic activity evaluated through determination kinetic parameters such Michaelis constant (Km), maximum enzymatic rate (Vmax), activation energy (Ea), turnover number (TON) frequency (TOF). encapsulated exhibits high acetaldehyde. key flow batch monolith calculated.
